Below is a simple, kid-friendly game I built for learning der / die / das with animal pictures. It works great on phones and tablets, perfect for a quick practice round at home. this is how my 5 year old learns German Articles in Kita:
Why triangles, circles, and squares?
In many German Kitas, articles are introduced with shapes so kids don’t need grammar terms yet:
- △ Triangle = das (neuter)
- ◯ Circle = die (feminine)
- ▢ Square = der (masculine)
Children remember picture → shape → article → word. The visual cue turns abstract grammar into something concrete and fun. That’s exactly how this game teaches.
How to use the game
- Beispiele ansehen (Examples):
Shows each animal with the correct article and shape. Tap Nächste to go through all 21. There’s also a small Abspielen button to hear the animal word. - Leichte Übung (Easy):
You see the shape hint and the animal. Choose der / die / das. Correct answers auto-advance; wrong answers give friendly feedback. Your best streak is saved. - Fortgeschrittene Übung (Advanced):
Same as Easy, but no shapes and no English helper. Pure article practice. Best streak is saved. - Zeitlauf (1 Minute):
A 60-second time trial—see how many you can get right before the timer runs out. The pill shows your latest score.
Tips that worked for us
- Do one Examples round together first (say the article out loud).
- In Easy, ask your child to say the article before tapping.
- Cheer the streak (“Let’s beat 5 in a row!”) to build momentum.
- Keep sessions short (2–4 minutes) but repeat often.
